Auf den Haciendas werden ausschließlich die herunterfallenden Blätter der Kakao-, Banan- und Apamatebäume, sowie der Yucca- und der Ocumo-Pflanze, als auch Komposterde verwendet. Die Komposterde wird aus den Fruchtkörpern - den Mazorcas - gewonnen. Somit nährt sich der Kakao auch wieder vom Kakao.
